Video marketing statistics to know for 2020

Video is continuing to grow in popularity and importance, which means it’s vital to stay on top of the latest advances and statistics in order to create a strong digital video marketing strategy

Video is a highly effective form of content and its popularity has gone hand-in-hand with the rise of social media. Despite the fact that so many of us consume online videos on a daily basis, many marketers still aren’t using video as part of their digital marketing strategy or aren’t seeing the best results.

In order to inform your marketing strategy and help you get the best possible ROI from campaigns, we’ve compiled some video marketing statistics that could help you get to grips with video.

92% of marketers say it’s an important part of their marketing strategy

In 2020, 92% of marketers say that video is an important part of their marketing strategy. This has grown from 78% in 2020, showing that the importance of video is only growing.

So what is it that makes video so important? Well, according to 88% of marketers, video marketing provides them with positive ROI. When you consider that only 33% said the same in 2020, it shows that consumer sentiment toward videos is much stronger now.

People will spend 100 minutes a day watching online videos in 2021

As well as more brands looking to utilize videos, consumers are now watching more videos than ever before. It is estimated that the average person will spend 100 minutes every day watching online videos in 2021. This is a 19% increase compared to daily viewing minutes in 2020, which stood at 84.

Jonathan Barnard, Head of Forecasting at Zenith, said of this trend: “The consumption of online video is growing rapidly, and the average person will spend half as much time viewing online video as they spend viewing conventional television this year. This fast-expanding supply of audiences is fuelling rapid growth in demand from advertisers, making online video the fastest-growing digital channel by advertising expenditure.”

99% of marketers using video will continue to do so in 2020

With the ROI of online videos increasing along with the amount of time consumers are spending watching them, it’s hardly surprising that 99% of the marketers who are currently using videos will continue to do so in 2020. On top of this, 95% of these marketers expect to increase or maintain their current spend on video marketing.

In terms of those marketers who aren’t currently using videos, 59% expect to start doing so this year.

While this shows that video needs to form part of your digital marketing strategy, it also means there will be a lot more competition to deal with. In order to stand out from competitors, you should make sure you understand consumer expectations around video, as well as the big video marketing trends for 2020.

48% of consumers want videos to reflect what they are interested in

As well as being entertaining, videos can form an important part of a consumer’s decision-making process. However, in order to get a customer to convert after watching a video, you need to ensure you are meeting their expectations.

In terms of the ideal qualities that consumers look for in order for videos to be valuable to their decision-making process, 48% want videos to reflect the specific products and services they own or are interested in. A further 43% want interactivity, with the ability to decide what information they want to view and when they want to view it.

However, extreme personalization isn’t really sought after, with just 12% saying they want videos to use their name and information within the content.

66% of video advertisements were 30 seconds long at the end of 2020

Although the common feeling is that consumers’ attention spans are getting shorter, it seems that this isn’t the case when it comes to video advertising. In Q3 of 2020, 66% of video adverts were 30 seconds long, climbing from Q3 2020’s 55%, showing that longer ads are being seen as effective.

Just 1% of video ads in the same period were six seconds long, with another 1% being 60-second ads. The second most popular ad length during this quarter was 15 seconds, accounting for 32% of ads.

Video marketing isn’t just B2C-focused

Although video is a powerful B2C tool, especially when teamed with social media, it is also being used more by B2B companies looking to increase leads and conversions. In fact, 41% of B2B marketers are interested in exploring how videos can be added to their marketing and sales strategies in 2020.

Our guide to video marketing will help you grow your business online using video content and video platforms.

With videos being a great way to share product information, utilizing them throughout the buyer journey can help to further qualify B2B sales leads.

It’s also worth noting that 22% of B2B organizations are interested in exploring the opportunities provided by podcasting and live streaming, suggesting that there may be opportunities in these areas too.

66% of US teens watch online videos every day

Online videos are particularly of interest to younger demographics with 66% of teens (13-19-year-olds) and 56% of tweens (8-12-year-olds) in the US reporting that they watch videos online every day. This represents huge increases in video viewing for these age gaps compared to 2020.

Not only do these age groups watch videos online a lot, but they also enjoy the videos they watch, suggesting that video content has improved. However, this also means that there is a lot of competition for those marketing to these age groups.

57% of marketers use live video

The rise of social media has meant that there are more types of videos to share than ever before. As a result, 57% of marketers now use live video within their strategies. Over a third (34%) of marketers are making use of Facebook’s live streaming options, creating in-the-moment videos that allow viewers to react in real-time. Instagram is the second most popular option, with 13% creating live videos on the platform.

Live videos are an effective way to create conversations and build a community around your brand. However, they may not be effective for every type of business, so it is worth assessing what your competitors are doing and researching what your audience wants.

MWC 2020 is cancelled: everything you need to know about what happens next

By James Peckham 13 February 2020

2020’s big mobile show has been cancelled

MWC 2020 – that’s Mobile World Congress 2020, to give it its full name – was set to run from February 24-27, but it has now been cancelled after health concerns in the wake of the coronavirus.

The GSM Association (GSMA), the company that organizes the show, has decided to cancel the whole event after a variety of companies including Sony, LG and HMD Global, pulled out of the show.

A statement from the GSMA said the organizers came to the conclusion that the show was “impossible” to hold after recent events.

GSMA CEO, John Hoffman, said, “With due regard to the safe and healthy environment in Barcelona and the host country today, the GSMA has cancelled MWC Barcelona 2020 because the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event.”

Hoffman continued, “The Host City Parties respect and understand this decision. The GSMA and the Host City Parties will continue to be working in unison and supporting each other for MWC Barcelona 2021 and future editions. Our sympathies at this time are with those affected in China, and all around the world.”

The coronavirus is a virus that has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). On February 12, 2020, there were 45,171 confirmed cases of the virus around the world, according to a WHO report.

MWC was cancelled on February 12, 2020, less than two weeks ahead of when the event was set to take place. We were originally expecting devices from manufacturers like Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, and many more.

What does this mean for new phones?

The show is no longer going ahead, but many manufacturers may still launch their products in alternative ways rather than attending Barcelona.

For example, Sony has confirmed it will go ahead with its launch of a new phone – which we expect to be the flagship Xperia 2 – through a YouTube video at the time the company’s press conference was meant to go ahead.

Many manufacturers have yet to announce firm plans as the cancellation has only just happened at the time of writing, but we know that LG and HMD Global – the company behind Nokia smartphones – intend to make their planned announcements at some point in the future, and we’d assume that would be the case for all brands with new devices to announce and show.

We’ll update this piece with more information on firm plans for launches once we know them, from companies such as Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and many more.

Will MWC 2020 be rescheduled?

The GSMA has yet to comment on future events, but it looks unlikely that it will be rescheduling the show at a later date considering the organizer’s main statement.

Ben Wood, a mobile analyst from CCS Insight consultancy, said, “The GSMA has been a victim of circumstances out of its control and it’s a huge disappointment the show will not go ahead this year.”

“The impact on small companies who have invested a disproportionate amount of their budgets and time on this event should not be under-estimated. MWC is an anchor event for many and now they face the challenge of having to figure out the best way to salvage something from this difficult situation.”

Does the cancellation cause problems for MWC 2021? Again, this is uncertain.

Wood said, “The GSMA now needs to be careful that there is not a knock-on effect from this year’s cancellation. Major companies and many attendees will be reviewing the importance of MWC to their business and the GSMA must work hard to have a clear path forward.

“This is particularly true for smaller business that have had to swallow many of the costs from this year’s show.”

Companies that had previously cancelled MWC 2020 attendance

The following companies are among those that had withdrawn from MWC 2020 before the announcement of the show being cancelled.

  • Amazon
  • Amdocs
  • AT&T
  • BT
  • Cisco
  • Deutsche Telekom
  • Ericsson
  • Facebook
  • HMD Global
  • Intel
  • LG
  • McAfee
  • MediaTek
  • Nokia
  • NTT Docomo
  • Nvidia
  • Orange
  • Rakuten
  • Royole
  • Sony
  • Sprint
  • Vivo
  • Vodafone
  • Western Digital

TCL and ZTE had previously cancelled their MWC 2020 press conferences, but still planned on making an appearance at the show.

Playing with little robots that act smart around obstacle courses

by Nancy Owano , Tech Xplore

(Tech Xplore)—A lot has been said about home robots giving assistance and companionship to children, the homebound and the elderly. Machines designed with expressive eyes and head gestures are of special interest and admiration. But what if we went back to creature type robots and giving them artificial intelligence such that they can be the robots we want to spend time with too?

That question is the foundation of the bots_alive story and technology.

Brad Knox said for nine years he researched how people could interact with machine learning, artificial intelligence and robotics. After he got his PhD at University of Texas at Austin he went to the MIT Media Lab as researcher.

He said there they wanted to see how robots could interact with people and they would huddle and ask why there were no robots they would really want to interact with for more than a few minutes!

The conversations led him to start bots_alive. He said the focus is on robots that you feel are alive even though you know they are just machines. The little robots are critter-like and bots_alive is now a Kickstarter project. They are offering a robot kit where your smartphone plays a key role as the eyes and brains of this spider.

Michael Irving in New Atlas reported that “A new kit called bots_alive, which adds AI and augmented reality elements to an existing Hexbug Spider, is now crawling out of the toy box and onto Kickstarter.”

Explaining the Hexbug, New Atlas said, “These relatively cheap robo-bugs are normally remote-controlled, but the bots_alive kit is designed to give them a life of their own.”

Evan Ackerman in IEEE Spectrum wrote about their use of computer vision. Ackerman said the little items are using “computer vision to localize a fiducial sticker placed on the robot’s head. As long as your phone’s camera can see the fiducial, it has full control of the robot’s movements, and gives it a life of its own.”

As the Kickstarter site page said, craft obstacle courses and watch these robots solve them with lifelike intelligence. This is a kit that turns mindless remote-controlled Hexbug Spiders into smart and autonomous creatures.

Knox said his team created robot behaviors that are varied and unpredictable. And that points to the significance of these little things. IEEE Spectrum noted what we have here are sophisticated brains being brought to cheap robots.

Tyler Lee in Ubergizmo: “It’s one thing to be able to manually remote control drones or robots, but it’s another thing to have them control themselves.” Lee added, “the possibilities of autonomous robots that can figure their way out of problems does hold a lot of promises.”

Lee described the process, saying “robots can find their way around various beacons. For example you could craft a maze and get the robot to seek out a blue beacon, and placing red beacons in its path means that its AI will then try to figure out a way around it.”

Lee wrote about the unpredictability in action, where “the robots are unpredictable as they will be able to generate a variety of possible paths to take before deciding, going to show that it is ‘thinking’ about its next move.”

Kyle Wiggers in Digital Trends also reported on this feature. “AI programmers typically give robots personalities with decision trees, Knox explained, dictating the rules by which they abide when behaving in certain ways. But true artificial intelligence of the kind embodied by bots_alive is entirely free form. ‘We don’t always know what the robot will do,’ he said.”

Those who want to have this item can pledge on the Kickstarter page where prices vary according to what you choose, so it is best to check there. But as an example, a pledge of $60 will get you the complete bot_alive kit. Estimated delivery is September.
