Options trading can be complicated, and beginners need to make sure to find a platform with plenty of educational resources and guidance. Advanced traders need to look for professional-grade features and research. Before choosing the right broker , each trader needs to consider his or her trading style and which features are most important in maximizing profitability.

What is Options Trading?

When it comes to the stock market, most people think no further than buying and selling individual stocks. Truthfully, the process of options trading isn’t much different than stock trading.

However, an option is simply a contract to buy or sell a stock at a pre-negotiated price and by a certain date. Simple as that. Learn more about how to trade options.

Options traders bet on which direction they think the price of a stock will go. Options contracts can be based on a wide variety of underlying securities, however, and many different types of orders can be placed, which makes them more versatile than stocks.

For example, those trading options can decide whether the prices could go up or down on the following:

Make sense? Sure, it does.

Buying and Selling Options

To buy options, you simply choose exactly what you’d like to buy and how many, and then place a buy to open order with a broker. If your order goes up or down in value, you have some options. At any rate, you can:

  • Sell at the agreed-upon price
  • Sell the contract to another investor
  • Let the contract expire

Best Stock Trading Apps for 2020

The StockBrokers.com best online brokers 2020 review (10th annual) took six months to complete and produced over 30,000 words of research. Here’s how we tested.

Many online brokers are wagering that mobile investing isn’t just about viewing a portfolio, maintaining a basic watch list, and placing simple trades. Instead, brokerages are working to bring the full trading experience to their mobile apps, including trade tools, advanced order types, detailed charting, complex options, cloud syncing, screeners, and much more.

No single broker has “cracked the code” to the ultimate mobile investor experience yet, but our top finishers this year are certainly close. With 42 different features being assessed for mobile trading alone, scoring high marks is no walk in the park. We conducted all our tests on iOS devices, and focused primarily on the iPhone.

E*TRADE Mobile, Power E*TRADE

In our 2020 Review, E*TRADE once again placed first because its apps, E*TRADE Mobile and Power E*TRADE Mobile, are easy to use and feature-rich. Both apps are supported in iOS and Android, while E*TRADE Mobile also supports the Apple Watch. Unique app features include streaming live Bloomberg TV, customized stock screening, third-party research ratings, and a customizable dashboard, among others. Read full review

TD Ameritrade Mobile, Mobile Trader

Like E*TRADE, TD Ameritrade offers not one, but two smartphone apps: TD Ameritrade Mobile (everyday investors) and TD Ameritrade Mobile Trader (active traders). Looking at mobile apps specifically, Mobile Trader is my top pick for traders in 2020. Upon login, you are taken straight into your watch lists, which sync with thinkorswim. Charting includes all 400+ indicators from the thinkorswim desktop platform, and chart preferences sync in the cloud. Read full review

Fidelity Mobile

Fidelity’s mobile experience is cleanly designed, bug-free, and delivers a phenomenal experience for investors. While active traders may be left wanting more, for the majority, Fidelity delivers, winning our award, No. 1 Investor App, in 2020. Read full review

Mobile trading with Alexa, Facebook, Twitter, and more

On the innovation front, TD Ameritrade was one of the first brokers to offer an Alexa Skill, and in August 2020, it became the first broker to integrate with Facebook Messenger, embracing the future of artificial intelligence (AI) with its own chatbot. Next, in 2020, Apple Business Chat, which I am using more and more frequently to grab quick stock quotes. Then, in 2020, TD Ameritrade for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both rolled out. All in all, TD Ameritrade is the undisputed leader in mobile and can be found everywhere you are.

Speaking of Alexa, for the millions of Americans who own an Amazon Alexa device, TD Ameritrade, alongside Fidelity, Charles Schwab, and Interactive Brokers, all have approved Alexa Skills. Our testing this year did not incorporate testing specific Alexa features; however, based on Amazon’s ratings, it appears TD Ameritrade has the lead in delivering a diverse quality experience.

The process of placing orders continues to become easier for customers, thanks to innovations with order entry functionality. Placing regular stock trades and single-leg options trades is now a breeze, regardless of the broker used, and for brokers who offer complex options trading, it is mostly painless.

Across the industry as a whole, although some functionality such as real-time streaming quotes, charting with multiple indicators, and synced watch lists are now pretty much industry standards, other functionality remains less common. For example, less than 50% of the industry supports basic stock alerts.

The world of mobile trading continues to evolve rapidly. While online brokers have come a long way from where they were even a year ago, there is still room for innovation.

What is the best stock trading app for beginners?

For beginners in 2020, the best stock trading apps are TD Ameritrade and Fidelity. Between the two brokers, TD Ameritrade has the edge for educational resources and trading tools. Meanwhile, Fidelity offers a more comprehensive research experience for casual investors.

What is the best free trading app?

The best free trading app is TD Ameritrade. TD Ameritrade offers free trading for stocks and ETFs. TD Ameritrade offers two smartphone apps: TD Ameritrade Mobile (everyday investors) and TD Ameritrade Mobile Trader (active traders). Between both apps, Mobile Trader is my top trading app pick for 2020.

How do I choose the best stock trading app?

For traders looking for the best stock trading app features, focus on watch lists, charting, and the order tickets. For example, while all apps support stock and ETF trading, not all brokers offer real-time streaming quotes. Instead, watch list quotes refresh every few seconds or more. Also broker apps like TD Ameritrade and TradeStation do a terrific job with their stock charting tool and alerts functionality. Both brokers offer traders access to several hundred technical indicators, and placing trades is a breeze.

How To Really Start Trading Stocks And Options On Your Mobile Phone

As investors, we are seldom ready to trust mobile trading applications until something forces the change. This was just the case for me.

Just this past winter I was traveling a lot for the holidays and just couldn’t access my desktop trading platform as much as I wanted. Thus, I had to rely on the mobile application.

The markets were fairly calm but with all of the end of the year “stuff” that tends to happen quickly I didn’t want to be away from covering trades if I need to. Hence the real problem. . .I had never been comfortable making a trade on my mobile phone.

If you’ve also been in this situation, or just can’t access the markets from work, then mobile trading has got to become part of your system. The technology is growing so fast that it truly is becoming and advantage for those who know how to use it properly.

So, today I’m going to help you set up and start really mobile trading!

Desktop Vs. Mobile Trading?

I still prefer desktop to mobile though I am much more comfortable with the direction I’m headed having fully integrated my mobile phone. The biggest advantage of mobile trading being that I’m not tied to the desk during the trading hours.

Sure I miss the ease of analyzing stocks including the technicals that mobile trading hasn’t quite mastered, but the charting and data feeds are amazing. Given the choice I would still prefer my Mac and mouse, yet I don’t always have that choice.

The awesome reality is that we shouldn’t choose one over the other today. Brokers have been rolling out such advanced technology on mobile devices and tablets that we all should be asking ourselves how we can effectively use both to make/save more money. Not shying away from mobile because we don’t understand how it works.

Spend Time To Learn The Platform

Like almost anything on earth you’re interested in mastering, you have to spend time to learn the platform. I use thinkorswim so I spent a ton of time navigating around their mobile trading system (both on my iPhone and iPad). I downloaded both a while ago, and they sat mostly unused until I made a point to try it out.

Kick the tires, break the software in, watch video tutorials from the brokers – whatever you have to do to understand the platform. You’ll never learn to trust it to make trades until you are confident in what it has to offer.

Make Small, Real Money Trades

As I mentioned before my biggest “fear” with mobile trading was that I couldn’t do enough analysis to make a smart trade on a mobile device. I had this preconceived notion that I needed to be in front of a huge platform to make smarter decisions with my money. Boy was I wrong!

Trading platforms are simple tools and nothing more. . .

They offer all kinds of bells and whistles. However, at the end of the day it is your strategy and psychology when entering the orders that make all the difference. So, if my strategy hadn’t changed, then placing an order on a desktop or mobile device is just a means of getting involved in the market.

Since I needed to overcome my fear, I decided to place a lot of very small trades with real money.

Smaller trades allowed me not to risk a lot on each trade while investing real money meant I would be 100% engaged in how things turned out. Had I done this on in a paper account I doubt I would have developed the confidence needed actually to invest real money? I would have been back to square one all again.

Desktop & Mobile At The Same Time

The last step I took to mobile trading integration was to analyze trades on my desktop then physically place the orders (open, close, adjust, etc.) on my iPhone while sitting at my desk. On my Mac, I would analyze an options trade then when I was ready to place the order I would pull out my iPhone and route it that way. It probably sounds stupidly simple I know, but you wouldn’t believe how hard it was to do both.

However hard it was; I developed the skills to move quickly through the mobile application yet had the confidence of knowing I was analyzing the trade correctly.

Eventually, it started to be much easier to analyze the charts and prices on my iPad, and I found myself using that much more than ever before. Again I already knew what types of trades fit my strategies, I just had an easier way of searching for them now.

Are You Mobile Trading Yet?

If you’ve already made the leap and started trading mobile, what kinds of problems have you faced? Add your comments below and share with others who haven’t started – offer your advice.

For those of you who are just getting into mobile trading, try to do what I did above (analyze on the desktop and make the trade on your phone) and report back here to let me know if this really worked for you too!
